Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you become starving," described one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
